How Vantage Risk built a brand from scratch

How Vantage Risk built a brand from scratch

Vantage Risk has spent the past year preparing for aggressive expansion while building visibility and trust in a market in transition.

In an interview with Financial Promoter, chief marketing and communications officer John Flannery explains that the Bermudian-based reinsurance and specialty insurance firm has been building momentum across multiple fronts as it positions itself for its next stage of growth.

With 10 insurance business lines, 20 products, and a growing specialty reinsurance arm, Vantage has amassed $1.6bn in Insurance-Linked Securities capital to deploy, providing a significant foundation for expansion.

Flannery, who was recently crowned the Insurance Marketer of the Year at the Financial Promoter USA Awards, explained that the firm’s trajectory had been shaped by a deliberate focus on differentiation since its early days.

He described joining the company at a formative stage, when it had fewer than 200 employees and no established brand identity.

The initial challenge has been to build a cohesive narrative capable of supporting valuation and attracting investment.

“Chapter one was all about how we develop an identity and narrative unique enough to support our valuation,” he said.

From the outset, leadership under founder Greg Hendrick, formerly of XL in Bermuda, placed emphasis on clarity of purpose, innovation and disciplined growth.

Flannery says Hendrick’s influence has been central to shaping both the company’s direction and its culture, citing a long-standing professional relationship spanning two decades.

The culture was has been built on three core pillars: talent, data, and creativity. Flannery described underwriting as a “celebrity game” in which success depended heavily on recognised expertise and reputation. Recruiting respected underwriters therefore was an early strategic priority for the business.

At the same time, Vantage has sought to leverage its status as a newer entrant by building its data capabilities without the burden of legacy systems.

Flannery says the company has approached its business as fundamentally data-driven from inception, aligning underwriting, analytics, technology and crucially, marketing.

He explains that this positioning has become increasingly advantageous with the rise of artificial intelligence. And, the ability to integrate analytics into underwriting processes without legacy constraints has allowed the firm to respond more dynamically to emerging risks and opportunities.

“We had this beautiful opportunity to start without any legacy systems, any legacy drag in terms of bureaucracy and company politics, and structure analytics from day one in a way that will serve us. Now with AI, that is acutely a strength.”

Perfect positioning

As CMCO, Flannery also frames “creativity and curiosity” as essential differentiators in the age of AI, but especially in a competitive marketplace such as insurance, dominated by larger, long-established carriers.

He says Vantage has had to work hard to communicate both what it has built and what it intends to build in order to overcome the absence of longstanding brand recognition.

That thinking extends into the company’s visual identity, where leadership involvement has played an unusually direct role.

Flannery says [founder] Greg Hendrick has been closely involved in the branding process, including selecting designers and shaping the conceptual brief.

The result has been the development of a distinctive identity incorporating illustrative, hand-drawn elements alongside structured data-inspired visuals.

In the interview, Flannery explains that the design concept behind the corporate identity aims to combine analytical rigour with a human touch, projecting approachability in a sector often characterised by conservative branding.

“It was very well received internally,” he smiles, highlighting the importance of alignment between branding and organisational culture.

Beyond brand identity, marketing at Vantage had been closely tied to relationship-building within the insurance and reinsurance sector.

Flannery emphasises that distribution remains highly dependent on personal connections, recalling advice from early in his career that successrequired familiarity with hundreds of market participants.

He says this dynamic shaped the company’s marketing approach, which focused on creating experiences that reinforced relationships and fostered trust.

Collaboration with distribution leadership, particularly the chief distribution officer, was therefore critical.

“That relationship can sometimes be fraught in some companies, but if you get it right, it is incredibly powerful,” he says.

Flannery says much of his team’s work centres on supporting visibility in the market through media engagement, events and broker communication.

Email marketing campaigns are designed to clarify underwriting appetite and generate higher-quality, quotable business.

Despite operating with a small, largely outsourced team, the marketing function has been structured around key inflection points in the underwriting cycle, such as renewal periods. This has allowed the company to maximise impact while maintaining efficiency.

Flannery says product development, the exploration of new markets and structural expansion are key strategic focuses for the senior leadership team right now, stating that Lloyd’s is another potential future avenue, describing it as a logical step for a specialty insurer seeking broader reach.

However, he says that immediate priorities remain focused on communicating the company’s evolving narrative effectively to stakeholders.

“We are looking at how to take advantage of having permanent capital,” he says.

The broader market context has supported Vantage’s ambitions. The reinsurance sector has experienced a period of improved returns following years of pricing discipline after substantial catastrophe losses earlier in the decade.

At the same time, the ILS market has seen renewed inflows as investors seek diversification and yield in a higher interest rate environment.

Demand for specialty risks, including political risk, credit and emerging sectors linked to technological change, had also grown. Flannery says Vantage targeting areas such as infrastructure, construction, and risks associated with the expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem has played well.

He describes this trend as part of a wider “infrastructure super-cycle”, driven by large-scale investment across multiple sectors linked to digital transformation.

This, he says, presents opportunities for insurers capable of understanding complex, evolving risk landscapes.

Ultimately, Flannery frames the function of marketing and communications as enabling leadership to articulate compelling, differentiated perspectives that resonate with clients and partners.

He said the goal is to ensure that when executives speak publicly, they captured attention through originality and insight, reinforcing Vantage’s positioning in an increasingly competitive market. “That is where the value lies,” he concludes.
