Global investment banking firm Jefferies is holding a Global Trading Day to support humanitarian aid charities helping the people of Maui.
On Wednesday 16 August 2023, Jefferies will donate 100% of its net trading commissions for all client trades in equities and fixed income. It will also make a standalone donation of 1 million USD (£786,365).
Jefferies is encouraging its 5,300 employees to personally get behind the initiative.
“We are devastated by what we have seen from the wildfires in Maui, and our hearts go out to the people who have experienced unimaginable loss in the last few days,” CEO Rich Handler and President Brian Friedman said in a joint media statement.
“Charities working on the front lines to provide aid and deliver services for those that have been displaced need all of our support.”
For the campaign to succeed, Jefferies is calling for clients around the world to join its collective efforts.
With several humanitarian charities involved in the initiative, funds will be “carefully allocated to qualified charities to make sure the proceeds go directly to the people most in need,” the media statement notes.
The Maui wildfires have seen devastation across the island and the death toll is expected to rise.
