Liberty Mutual Insurance has launched Liberty Biberty, a new brand character inspired by a 2019 ad in which an actor famously mispronounced the company name.
Liberty Biberty is Liberty Mutual’s first brand character in eight years, developed with creative agency Bandits & Friends and crafted by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
Liberty Mutual has taken a viral cultural moment, an actor flubbing the brand name, and deliberately turned it into a long-term brand asset.
Jenna Lebel, Chief Marketing Officer for US Retail Markets at Liberty Mutual, said the character gives the brand “a fresh way to show up in culture,” adding that “memorable characters help people connect with our brand.”
The decision to expand the character universe rather than replace LiMu Emu & Doug shows a long-term commitment to character-led advertising, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop’s involvement signalling serious creative investment rather than a social media stunt.
The campaign rolls out across television, streaming, social media and creator collaborations as part of Liberty Mutual’s broader character-led brand strategy.
Insurers are increasingly investing in character-led brand strategies to build long-term recognition and emotional connection in a highly competitive category.
