Make My Money Matter has launched a video campaign to expose the relationship between UK pension schemes and the fossil fuel industry.
Olivia Colman’s alter ego “Oblivia Coalmine” starred as the latex-wearing CEO of a fossil fuel company thanking pension holders for their “generosity” in helping her achieve high profits.
Despite 66% of pension holders supporting renewables in their pensions, £88 billion is invested in oil and gas companies through UK pensions, according to the campaign.
Richard Curtis, filmmaker and co-founder of Make My Money Matter, said: “We hope this sinister performance by Olivia Colman highlights a more serious issue – that billions of pounds of our hard-earned pensions are driving the climate crisis.
“People across the UK want their money to help our planet, not harm it and all our pension schemes must now pay attention and take immediate and urgent action,” said Curtis.
The advert calls for the pensions industry to end its investment in fossil fuel expansion, commit to net-zero targets, and report on their progress in tackling deforestation and ramping up investments into climate solutions.
The ad has been launched ahead of COP28 in the UAE where the future of fossil fuels is expected to be high on the agenda.
Make My Money Matter is a people-powered campaign founded by filmmaker Richard Curtis, which aims to give savers more voice and choice over their money.
